Meshmixer is no longer maintained. Here's what to use instead.

Short answer

Meshmixer is legacy software: Autodesk has stopped developing it and states it will not support it, though it is still listed and still downloadable. If you only ever used it to make a model manifold — which is what most people used it for — a browser tool now does that job with no install. If you used it to sculpt, hollow or generate supports, your replacement is Blender or Fusion 360, not a repair tool.

Read this before the table. SliceReady is our tool. So everything below about the other tools is what they say about themselves on their own pages, as of July 2026 — not our benchmark of them. We have not run a controlled comparison, and we are not going to pretend we have.

You will notice the table is not flattering to us. That is the point. A comparison that only makes its author look good is an advert with a table in it.

What actually happened to Meshmixer

Autodesk wound it down, and says so plainly: the tool is no longer in development and will not be supported going forward. Its own answer to "what now?" is Fusion 360, which has absorbed some of the mesh tooling.

It is not deleted, though, and it is worth being precise about that — plenty of articles, including an earlier version of this one, have said "gone" when they meant "abandoned". Autodesk still lists Meshmixer, it is still free, and it is still downloadable. Autodesk has also said it has no current plans to retire it.

So the honest description is legacy, not dead. It still runs, and plenty of people still keep a copy. But it is unmaintained: no updates, no fixes, no guarantee it survives the next OS release. That is fine for an occasional job and a bad foundation for a workflow.

Worth knowing, because half the tutorials on the internet still point there: the old Netfabb online repair service is dead too. If a guide sends you to a web page to upload your STL to Netfabb, that guide is a fossil.

Be honest about what you actually used it for

Meshmixer was a big tool, and most people used a very small corner of it. The replacement question only makes sense once you know which corner was yours.

Where SliceReady loses

Look at the fourth column again. On raw repair capability, iamRapid and JustFixSTL claim more than we do. They say they weld duplicate vertices; we do not do that. iamRapid says it removes disconnected shells and resolves self-intersections; we do neither. If your mesh's problem is a stray fragment sealed inside the body, or geometry that intersects itself, our tool is not the one that helps you.

We also read fewer formats. No OBJ. Not even ASCII STL, today. Those are real gaps and they are on our list — but a list is not a feature, so they belong in the "loses" column until they ship.

So which one should you use?

Sending you elsewhere costs us nothing. Sending you to the wrong tool would cost you an evening.

Is Meshmixer discontinued?

Development has stopped, and Autodesk says outright it will not support the tool going forward. But it has not been deleted: Autodesk still lists it, it is still a free download, and Autodesk has said it has no current plans to retire it. The accurate word is legacy, not gone — it runs, it simply receives no updates.

What is the best free Meshmixer alternative for repairing an STL?

For repair alone, a browser tool — SliceReady, iamRapid or JustFixSTL — does the job with no install. For the sculpting, hollowing and support work Meshmixer was loved for, the honest answer is Blender or Fusion 360. No repair tool replaces that, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Can I repair an STL without installing anything?

Yes. Several tools now run the repair in the browser. Check the tool's own claim about where your file goes before you drop it in: some process locally, and at least one processes on its own servers.

Is Meshmixer still safe to use?

It runs, but it is unmaintained — no security fixes, no compatibility updates, no promise it survives your next OS upgrade. For a one-off repair, use something maintained. For sculpting, that trade-off is yours to weigh.
